Tri Jen and Hidden Treasure Store is a place in Stanley that is a must visit. Tri Jen is a lunch and coffee shop specializing in variety of espressos and blended ice drinks located in the Hidden Treasure second hand store. Many people with disabilities are working to keep the store going. Some of those jobs are washing, tagging, stocking and ironing clothing. Hidden Treasure received donations of articles from all over and volunteers along with Tri City Cares individuals turn those articles into our Hidden Treasures. Hidden Treasure collects small toys like beanie babies that are sent to the soldiers in Iraq which they give them to the children of Iraq. These toys are perfect for soldiers to carry with them because they are a soft toy. Personal items such as toilet paper, small size shampoos, deordant and portable food items such ramin noodles and hard candies are always welcomed for care packages for our soldiers.
“Retired Senior Program (RSVP)- These are amazing volunteers that give thier time and talent to the store by acting as cashier, pricing clothing and doing many other jobs. We wouldn’t be able to keep our doors open without them.” reported Lynn Petz.

There has been much discussion on how the local area businesses, hospital, and schools can compete for workers with the higher paying jobs created by oil activity. There is always good and bad that comes from change. The local economy is doing well but the fear of losing the economy possibly in the next few years scares a lot of citizens and businesses. Increasing the wages now to compete with the rising economy and having to stay at those wages when things start to cool off is a concern. Please comment on this issue. It would be nice to know your opinion.

Last night, Tuesday March 25, 2008, the Stanley School District hosted a public meeting to discuss the future of the school district. Stanley is looking at being stable in student numbers and with the increase of oil field activity the financial end is looking good. Concerns of the public were available housing for new people moving into the district, providing laptops for large amount of new students (Stanley provides laptops for all students grades 5-12), building improvements and bussing. These are just a few comments made at the meeting. The Stragetic Planning Minutes will be posted on the school’s website www.stanley.k12.nd.us

The Stanley Schools will be hosting the Girls Basketball District Tournaments on Februrary 7, 8 and 9, 2008 and the Boys Basketball District Tournaments on February 21, 22, and 23, 2008. This a benefit to our students, school and community. It brings in people from other communities to shop in our stores, eat at our restaurants and so on. The students and staff at the school get a great opportunity to play hosts to other community players, coaches, cheerleaders and fans. We welcome all to our community and school.

The Stanley Junior Class of 2009 parents are organizing a drug and alcohol free after prom party for the teens of Stanley. The party will be held at the elementary gym from 12 midnight to 4 a.m. This year’s entertainment will be provided by DC Entertainment from Minot ND. He provides music and inventive games for our teens. Donations are the only source of income for the after prom parties and after graduation parties. Thanks to our wonderful community and businesses in Stanley and from the surrounding area, they have made the after prom parties a successful event for many years .

Getting feedback from over 200 persons is a lot of work. All that input has resulted in a strategic plan that will look out for local needs for a long time. We are a community where all members regardless of their background are encouraged to pursue economic, social, cultural, and recreational opportunities. In 2012, Stanley is a hub of economic activity that is stimulated by diverse sectors including our local small businesses and merchants, agricultural production and processing, and the energy industry, both fossil fuels and renewable energy. We have a state of the art telecommunications infrastructure which allows a new generation of workers to work and live in Stanley. Stanley, ND was featured on ABC’s Nightline on Friday, January 18th. Due to the recent oil boom that has hit, all eyes are on Mountrail county. The biggest question is will it help the community or hurt the community in the long run?

Compliments of the Horizons program, residents of Stanley can now take advantage of a mini-library dedicated to Leadership. The mini-library is located at the Mountrail County Extension Office. Books are available to check out during office hours (Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and are geared to teach individuals how to become better leaders.
